Need Some Suggestions

April 12, 2016 By John Lewis

Hello all. This coming June is the third annual RageCon here in Reno Nevada. This year I volunteered to be the Panel/Seminar Coordinator and help take on a more active roll in the organization of the event. Things are progressing nicely but I wanted to reach out to our readers and ask for additional ideas regarding the types of panels, seminars, or workshops you would find interesting (even if you’re not attending the event). Past topics have covered such topics as tabletop gaming, industry news, and cosplay techniques.

Here are several suggestions I’ve received as well as topics covered in previous years:

  • A GM’s Guide to Managing Problem Players
  • The State of Indie RPG’s
  • A Brief Overview of Various RPG Systems
  • Storytelling 101
  • Kickstarter: From Concept to Finished
  • Game Design
  • What makes a Good PC?
  • Women in Gaming

So what do you think? If you were going to listen to a speaker (or speakers) for 30 minutes to an hour, what would you want to hear about? What topics, advice, or information would you find interesting an engaging?

A couple additional notes: if you are in the area June 24th to 26th, we would love to have you attend the con. In fact if you would like to be one of our featured panelists I’m always looking for new people and perspectives.

About John Lewis

John has been roleplaying since Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition (the old blue box). He's a fan of games "Powered by the Apocalypse", the Cypher System, and Dungeons & Dragons 5E. He also enjoys board games and miniatures games. He prefers game mastering over playing, due to his love of world-building, reacting to the crazy things players do, and his enjoyment of improv. If he had a gaming specialty, it would be coming up with complex and interesting plot-arcs that are tied to the PCs on the fly, with little or no prep. He regularly attends DunDraCon and KublaCon in California.

I think that a show on “Narrative Research” would be interesting to me. Once I spent some time on Google Scholar and was able to find a few papers in the field of psychology that described studies showing that narratives are part of our sense of well being. In particular I recall the idea that if you go through something traumatic, the ability to convey how that was a growing experience for you in a narrative to your friends, actually aids in your ability to resolve that event in a positive light. How this ties into role playing is that by establishing a sort of “narrative competency”, RPGs are actually providing a skill set to people that can help boost mental health and coping strategies.

I like that idea, especially with today’s emphasis on “narrative” in RPG’s. Consider it added to my list! Thank you.

Is it worth putting your product on the DM’s Guild?
What makes a system part of the OSR and how do you select the OSR product that’s right for your table?
