Something else I do in terms of movie inspiration: when I do borrow a plot I don’t borrow one from a sci-fi or fantasy movie, instead I “re-skin” a historical drama, romantic comedy, or political thriller. I’ve noticed that if I recycle a plot from a different genre and then “fantasy it up” my players don’t really notice and think it’s original content (as opposed to having them take a magic item to a volcano in order to destroy it!).

Thanks for reading. I hope you continue to find our blog useful and inspiring!

Gotta say, I LOVE your movie references! Haha! The Princess Bride is one of my favourite movies ever, and Fury Road was awesome, despite having very little characterisation! I was surprised by that. The pacing, you’re right, is awesome.
Watching docos is a great one. I love reading books on history, and lots of fantasy books too.
Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles, about the Viking invasion of England in the 9th century, has always inspired me particularly much. Talk about showing how things are from a character’s viewpoint! Also, the whole way it’s written is just… refreshing.
But also, going out and getting some space in the wide world… yeah, great point.
Cheers for the tips mate, hope you get back in full stride soon!! 🙂
