My biggest thing is getting out of that trap that the GM is responsible for everyone having fun at they table. Yes, the GM often shoulders the creative-load of setting up a story/adventure/campaign. But many do that by choice because they are that type of a creative person. That doesn’t mean the player shows up with his dice, character sheet, and Cheetos, and waits for the fun to ensue. Be active and part of the game.

Talk about what you find interesting in the game (or don’t find interesting), things you’d like to see your character do or interact with, and discuss your character’s personal story arc as well as how he relates to the campaign story-arcs. I’ve found that those players I talk with (or text or e-mail) outside the gaming session are more connected to the game and seem to enjoy it to an even greater degree.
